The Steller's Jay is an uncommon resident of coniferous forests in the mountains of western North America. The Breeding Bird Survey suggests little change in the Canadian population since about 1970. There are no serious conservation concerns for the species at this time. This species has been identified as a priority for conservation and/or stewardship in one or more Bird Conservation Region Strategies in Canada.
The subspecies Cyanocitta stelleri carlottae is endemic to the Queen Charlotte Islands and has a small global population (Campbell et al. 1997). There are, however, no known conservation concerns for the species at this time.
