Population status

House Finch
(Haemorhous mexicanus)

With good coverage of the species' range, the House Finch is well monitored by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) in Canada. National BBS data show a greater than 100% increase in numbers throughout the species' Canadian range, reflecting the range expansion of House Finch in Canada since 1970.  The population increased from 1970 until the mid-1990s, decreased in the mid- to late 1990s, and has since stabilised. The population decrease during the 1990s coincides with the spread of mycoplasmal conjunctivitis starting in 1994. The species is well established in the United States; continental-level BBS results show little change overall since the late 1960s though numbers have decreased since the mid-1990s.
