The Pine Grosbeak is a widespread, common species across Canada. Data from both the Breeding Bird Survey and Christmas Bird Count suggest an increase in the population since 1970. However, both these surveys cover less than half the species' range and there is uncertainty over the magnitude of the trend. The reliability of this assessment is therefore considered low. This species has been identified as a priority for conservation and/or stewardship in one or more Bird Conservation Region Strategies in Canada.
Studies in Finland have shown that Pine Grosbeak numbers declined in managed boreal forests, but changed little in unlogged remnants (Virkkala 1991).
