The White-eyed Vireo is a rare breeder in shrubby thickets and fallow pastures, with a limited distribution in southern Ontario. The bulk of the breeding population for this species is in the United States, where there has been a moderate increase in population since the early 1970s. However, data are insufficient to determine its population status in Canada.
The lack of reliable monitoring data for this species makes it difficult to determine population status and assess conservation concerns. Like many scrubland-dependent species, the White-eyed Vireo may be affected by increasing habitat loss and degradation. Reduction of early successional scrubland habitat as a result of intensive agriculture and urban development may limit opportunities for expansion (Hopp et al. 1995, James 2007b).
