The Scarlet Tanager, a species of eastern Canada's deciduous forests, is well monitored by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). BBS results indicate that the current population is similar to that in 1970. The Scarlet Tanager is a forest interior species sensitive to the effects of habitat fragmentation, including increases in nest predation and brood parasitism rates (Mowbray 1999).
Concerns about habitat fragmentation, brood parasitism, and nest predation have been raised (Mowbray 1999), with a recommended focus on the preservation and restoration of large tracts of deciduous forest.
