The Blue-winged Teal population is monitored primarily in its core breeding range through the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey (WBPHS) in western Canada, as well as the Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey of the Central Interior Plateau of British Columbia. The species is also monitored outside of the WBPHS by the Southern Ontario Waterfowl Plot Survey. The Blue-winged Teal is experiencing increasing population trends in almost all surveyed areas (North American Waterfowl Management Plan 2012), except in Southern Ontario and Quebec (CWS Waterfowl Committee 2017). The two populations of Blue-winged Teal are at an acceptable level relative to their North American Waterfowl Management Plan goals. Detailed information on the population status of waterfowl species is available in the Population Status of Migratory Game Birds in Canada report (summarized version).
