The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides good coverage of the breeding population of Eastern Kingbird in Canada, and is the most reliable source of population trend data. BBS results demonstrate a consistent long-term decrease in the population since about 1970. This decrease is apparent in most Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) that host the species and for which results are available (displayed below), but varies in magnitude among regions. In the two BCRs hosting the highest breeding density of kingbirds (see BBS relative abundance map), the decline is greatest in the Lower Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Plain BCR population (50% decrease since 1970). BBS results for North America also indicate a decrease at the continental level, though the magnitude of that decline is smaller than in Canada. The Eastern Kingbird has been below the lowest acceptable levels of its national population goal since the late 1980s (see Canada graph below).
