The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is well suited to monitor this vocal species, although coverage is poor in the northern parts of the range. BBS results indicate that the Pileated Woodpecker population in Canada has shown a large increase since 1970, continuing through into the most recent decade. Population trends vary from relatively stable (the western Northern Pacific Rainforest and Great Basin BRCs) to large increases among the Bird Conservation Regions that host the species, and for which there are reliable results (displayed below). Christmas Bird Count results, which monitor the species during the winter, provide support for a large increase in the population since 1970. The Pileated Woodpecker is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
