Population status

Pileated Woodpecker
(Dryocopus pileatus)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is well suited to monitor this vocal species, although coverage is poor in the northern parts of the range. BBS results indicate the Pileated Woodpecker population in Canada has shown a large increase since 1970. These increases have occurred across the range of Bird Conservation Regions in which the species breeds and over-winters. The increase has been relatively steady throughout the survey period and continues throughout the most recent decade. Winter Christmas Bird Count results provide support for a large increase in the population since 1970.
