Population status

Red-bellied Woodpecker
(Melanerpes carolinus)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides good coverage of this species' breeding population in southern Ontario. Results suggest that the population has shown a large, almost exponential increase in Canada since about 1970. However, this result has poor precision. The Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario supports this increase by showing a large increase in occurrence in Ontario between the two Atlas periods, as well as a northward expansion of the species. The North American results of the BBS show the continental population has also increased since the mid-1960s, but at a steadier, more moderate pace than the Canadian population.
