The Ring-necked Duck is pimarily monitored on its core breeding range through the Waterfowl Breeding Population Habitat Survey, and the Eastern Waterfowl Breeding Ground Survey, as well as the Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey of the Central Interior Plateau of British Columbia. The species is also monitored by other small-scale regional breeding waterfowl surveys across Canada, including the Southern Ontario Waterfowl Plot Survey. Ring-necked Duck numbers in the Prairies and Western Boreal Forest have been increasing since the 1990s, contributing to the overall increase in the national population. However, in eastern Canada the population has remained stable. Each Ring-necked Duck population has a national population goal; both populations are at an acceptable level relative to their respective goals. Detailed information on the population status of waterfowl species is available in the Population Status of Migratory Game Birds in Canada report (summarized version).
