The Song Sparrow is well monitored by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), which provides good coverage of the breeding population in Canada. BBS results show that the population has experienced a decrease in abundance of about 38% since 1970, much of which occurred during the late 1970s. This decrease was followed by a period of relative stability until the mid-1990s, when it began again but at a lower rate. Results of the BBS from throughout North America show a similar pattern. The Song Sparrow is below the lowest acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
