Population status

American Goldfinch
(Spinus tristis)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the most reliable source of data for the American Goldfinch, with good coverage of the species' breeding population. BBS results indicate that the overall Canadian population has declined but is still within the range considered to be similar to that of 1970. Population trends vary regionally among the Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) that host the species, with long-term decreases in some of the western BCRs (e.g., Northern Pacific Rainforest, Great Basin, Boreal Taiga Plains). All BCRs for which there are reliable/adequate BBS trends are shown below.
