Population status

Brown Creeper
(Certhia americana)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides the most reliable data on population status for the Brown Creeper in Canada. However the BBS is not ideal because it covers less than half the breeding population, and the secretive behaviour and vocalization characteristic of this species (infrequent and high-pitched call and song) makes it difficult to detect, especially by ear. The Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario, which covers about 44% of the population, offers a good supplementary source of data. The BBS suggests the national population has increased by about 38% since 1970. The Ontario Atlas also shows an increase in the distribution of the Ontario population between the two Atlas periods. Therefore, the overall assessment for this species is a moderate increase with medium reliability.
