Population status

Clark's Nutcracker
(Nucifraga columbiana)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the most reliable source of data for the Clark's Nutcracker in Canada and suggests little overall change in the population since the early 1970s. However, the wide annual fluctuations in population (see graph in table below) and poor coverage of the species' high elevations habitat contribute to some uncertainty in this assessment. Christmas Bird Count (CBC) results for North America also suggest little change in the population. The CBC results supplement the BBS and help address the question of habitat coverage, although these results include birds breeding in the United States as well as Canada. Considering the agreement between these two sources, the reliability of this assessment is considered high.
