Population status

Dark-eyed Junco
(Junco hyemalis)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides the best data for status assessment of this species, although the low coverage of the breeding population reduces its reliability. BBS results show a steady but small decrease since about 1970, resulting in a 26% decrease in in abundance since 1970. Of the Bird Conservation Regions which report BBS trends with medium or high reliability, most show a moderate or large decrease in population since about 1970, with the exception of the Northern Rockies BCR, which shows little overall change (all BCRs with moderate or high reliability trends are displayed below).
