Population status

Fox Sparrow
(Passerella iliaca)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is considered the best source of population data available for the Fox Sparrow, although it covers only the extreme southern edge and some western and eastern sections of the breeding population. The BBS results suggest a relatively unchanged population since about 1970. While the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) results include birds breeding in both Canada and the United States, the trend is dominated by Canadian birds, which make up about 60% of the continental population. In addition, the CBC provides very good coverage of the wintering range of this species. CBC results show the continental wintering population has shown little overall change since 1970.
