Population status

Golden-crowned Kinglet
(Regulus satrapa)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides the most reliable information on the national status of Golden-crowned Kinglet in Canada, though fluctuations in the population trend reduce the precision of results. BBS results suggest that the population has undergone a moderate increase in Canada since 1970, with the overall population now about 35% larger. However, at the regional level, results vary widely among the five Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) for which reasonably reliable results are available; the western BCRs (Great Basin and Northern Pacific Rainforest, Northern Rockies) all show long-term population decreases while the rest show increases. Continental results from the Christmas Bird Count also suggest a borderline moderate increase in population. Considering the agreement between these two sources the reliability of this assessment is considered high. BBS results at the continental level suggest a slight decrease in population since the late 1960s; most of which occurred before the mid-1970s.
