Population status

Great Cormorant
(Phalacrocorax carbo)

Periodic counts of seabird breeding colonies in Canada give no evidence of change in population since 1970. Christmas Bird Count results from throughout North America suggest an increase in the continental population. The species is concentrated in well-populated coastal areas, breeds in the open, and feeds in inshore waters throughout the year, thus the assessment of numbers is not difficult. Although numbers seen on surveys are relatively low, the reliability of this assessment is considered medium.
