Population status

Lincoln's Sparrow
(Melospiza lincolnii)

The Lincoln's Sparrow is not well monitored in Canada. The best source of trend data for this species comes from the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), although the survey only covers some 10% of the breeding population. Results indicate little overall change in this species' population since about 1970. At the regional level, BBS results from individual Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) suggest that Lincoln's Sparrows tend to show increasing trends in western Canada, and decreasing trends in central and eastern Canada (all BCRs with reasonably reliable trends displayed below). Overall, this species is assessed as showing little long-term change in Canada, but with low reliability. Results from the BBS for North America suggest a moderate decrease in the continental population since the mid-1960s.
