Population status

Northern Flicker
(Colaptes auratus)

Populations of the Northern Flicker are fairly well monitored in Canada by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) although the survey does not cover the northern portion of the breeding range. The BBS results indicate that the Canadian population has shown little overall change since 1970. BBS trends from most Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) with reliable results also show little overall population change. However, two BCRs (Prairie Potholes and Lower Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Plain BCRs) show population decreases of about 50% (results of all BCRs with reasonably reliable trends are displayed below). At the continental level, BBS results from throughout North America indicate a decrease in population of about 48% since the mid-1960s.
