Population status

Red-breasted Sapsucker
(Sphyrapicus ruber)

Although the best data on population trends are from the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), the Red-breasted Sapsucker is not well monitored in Canada because coastal populations breed primarily at high elevations outside the range of the BBS and there is little coverage in the northern portion of the species' range. The species is known to hybridize with Red-naped Sapsuckers in a narrow zone west of the Rockies, which may complicate identification for the BBS in that area. Despite medium precision in the results, BBS data suggest little overall change in the population relative to about 1970. BBS data from throughout North American suggest a relatively unchanged population at the continental level as well.
