Population status

Ruby-crowned Kinglet
(Regulus calendula)

Both the North American Christmas Bird Count (CBC), and the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provide information on Canadian populations of the Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Although the CBC includes birds breeding in the United States, it covers approximately 75% of the winter range in North America, and is dominated by birds breeding in Canada, which make up more than 80% of the continental population. The BBS provides information directly on the population breeding in Canada, and has a more standardized survey design, but provides poor coverage of the northern portion of the range in Canada, covering about 28% of the breeding population. BBS results are therefore considered a supplement to the CBC. The North American CBC results suggest continental wintering populations of this species have shown a moderate increase since about 1970. Over the same time period, the BBS results show a small positive trend in the Canadian population but the magnitude is within the category considered to be of little overall change. Considering both sources, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet is assessed as showing a moderate increase in its Canadian population since 1970 with high reliability since both surveys indicate a positive change.
