Population status

Red-headed Woodpecker
(Melanerpes erythrocephalus)

In Canada, the small population of this species is well covered by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), although the precision of results is medium. BBS data for the species show a large decrease relative to about 1970, such that the total Canadian population is estimated to have declined by more than 60% during this time period. Although the BBS is an effective monitoring method, early detection of significant short-term decreases in Canada may be difficult for this small population. Results from the BBS for North America show that the continental population has also undergone a large decline since the mid-1960s.
