Population status

Rufous Hummingbird
(Selasphorus rufus)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the only source of data on the population status of the Rufous Hummingbird in Canada. BBS trends suggest a population decrease of about 50% since about 1970. However, because the BBS only covers about 40% of the breeding population, and Rufous Hummingbirds are not very vocal during the breeding season, reliability of the trend is ranked medium. BBS data from throughout North America also show a large population decrease at the continental level.
