The Semipalmated Plover migrates over a broad front, concentrating at coastal sites during migration, but is also widely distributed in smaller numbers at inland sites (Nol and Blanken 2014). Because it is widespread and common, it is moderately well captured by migration monitoring programs. Though the precision of the trend estimate from these surveys is poor, the results suggest that Semipalmated Plovers have shown a slight negative trend but essentially little overall change in abundance since about 1970. At a regional level, preliminary results from the second Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas suggest that, although never a common or widespread species in the area, the abundance and distribution of Semipalmated Plover has decreased significantly in the Maritimes since the first Atlas (1986-1990; Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas 2011).
