Population status

Sooty Grouse
(Dendragapus fuliginosus)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides the best data on population trends for Sooty Grouse in Canada. Because the Sooty Grouse has only recently been considered a separate species, the BBS results for both Sooty and Dusky Grouse are combined. However, almost all of the Sooty Grouse range lies within the Northern Pacific Rainforest Bird Conservation Region (BCR), where BBS results suggest a large decrease since about 1970. This result is consistent with regional accounts of pronounced declines, such as for Haida Gwaii (Doyle 2004). Similarly, range-wide BBS trends (Canada and the United States), which are analysed separately for Sooty Grouse, also suggest a large population decrease. The BBS results presented below show results from the Canadian portion of the Northern Pacific Rainforest BCR.
