Population status

Wilson's Snipe
(Gallinago delicata)

Results from the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) suggest that the national population of Wilson's Snipe has shown a moderate increase relative to 1970. BBS coverage is sparse in the northern portion of their range. The species prefers to breed in bogs, fens and swamps where it is often inconspicuous at the time of the surveys (Mueller 1999), thus these results are considered to be of medium reliability. Regional results vary widely, from a large increase in the Prairie Potholes and Northern Rockies Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs), both areas of high breeding density, to decreases in the rest of the British Columbia BCRs and in the east (all BCRs with sufficiently reliable results are displayed below). BBS results from throughout North America indicate that the population has changed little at the continental level since the mid-1960s.
