Population status

Wood Thrush
(Hylocichla mustelina)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the most reliable source of data for the Wood Thrush, with good coverage of the species' breeding population, which is concentrated in southern Ontario and Quebec, and across most of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. BBS results indicate that the species has exhibited a large and steady decrease in numbers since about 1970. Regional BBS trends vary somewhat among Bird Conservation Regions (BCR). There are three BCRs that have reliable trends (displayed below). Results from the Boreal Hardwood Transition and Atlantic Northern Forest BCRs show large population declines since about 1970, whereas the Lower Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Plain populations have shown little change since about 1970. BBS results from throughout North America suggest that the continental population of Wood Thrush has also shown a large decrease since the mid-1960s.
