Population status

Yellow-rumped Warbler
(Setophaga coronata)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the most reliable source of information on the population status of the Yellow-rumped Warbler. However, because the BBS does not cover the full breeding range of the species, the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is used as a supplementary data source. BBS results suggest a moderate increase in the Canadian breeding population since 1970. CBC results from throughout North America also suggest a moderate increase in the wintering population. While these results include birds breeding in both United States and Canada, a high proportion of the data comes from Canadian breeders. These results therefore reflect the status of the species in Canada. Considered together, the two surveys suggest that the Yellow-rumped Warbler has shown a moderate increase in Canada since the early 1970s. Trends across the numerous Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) that host the species, and for which there are reasonably reliable data (displayed below), suggest little change or an increase in abundance similar to that of the national population, with the exception of a small decrease in the Northern Rockies BCR.
