Population status

American Dipper
(Cinclus mexicanus)

The American Dipper is poorly monitored in Canada. Neither the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) nor the Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) provide good coverage of the species' breeding population. However, both surveys cover somewhat different portions of the species' range thus improving the overall coverage; both suggest a relatively stable population since the early 1970s at the national and continental level. Taking the BBS and CBC results together, the assessment of population change for this species is considered to be of medium reliability. The American Dipper is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
