Population status

Bank Swallow
(Riparia riparia)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides good coverage for Bank Swallow; results demonstrate a steep, long-term decrease in abundance since 1970 resulting in an estimated loss of 96% of the population since about 1970. Though the precision of the trend estimate is considered medium, the magnitude and consistency of the trend both in Canada and throughout North America leaves little doubt of the species' large population decline. The long-term population goal is based on the BBS and the Bank Swallow below the lowest acceptable level relative to that goal (see Canada graph below). Once the Recovery Strategy is developed under the Species at Risk Act, this goal will be re-examined.
