The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the most reliable source of data for the Baltimore Oriole, with good coverage of the species' breeding population concentrated across south-eastern and central Canada. BBS results demonstrate a consistent, long-term decrease, resulting in a loss of approximately 70% of the Canadian population since the early 1970s. The species has also decreased in the United States where the majority of the breeding population occurs; BBS results from throughout North America indicate a 44% decrease in abundance. The Baltimore Oriole is below the lowest acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see Canada graph below).
