Bewick's Wren
(Thryomanes bewickii)

The Bewick's Wren is best monitored by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). Its breeding range in Canada is almost entirely restricted to the south coast of British Columbia, where there are an adequate number of BBS routes for trend analysis. BBS data indicate a large decrease in the population since the early 1970s, suggesting a loss of some 79% of the population. Although the Canadian coastal population appears to have decreased, the British Columbia Breeding Bird Atlas indicates that the species has recently begun breeding in very small numbers in the southern interior of British Columbia for the first time (British Columbia Breeding Bird Atlas 2011). Range-wide data from the BBS also show a decrease, though of lower magnitude, in the North American population. The Bewick's Wren is below the lowest acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
