The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides the best available data for Black-headed Grosbeak in Canada with good coverage of the species' range. BBS results indicate an almost 95% increase in the national population, with the highest rate of increase during the most recent period (2006-2016). At the regional level, the greatest increases are seen in the Northern Rockies and Great Basin Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs). The population trend in the Northern Pacific Rainforest BCR is within the bounds considered to have shown little overall change relative to 1970. At the continental level, BBS data from throughout North America also indicate an increase though to a lesser extent than in Canada. The Black-headed Grosbeak is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see graph for Canada below).
