The Blue Jay is well monitored by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), which covers a large portion of the species' breeding population in Canada. BBS results indicate that numbers have increased by about 80% since 1970. This increase has been relatively steady throughout the survey period, though it appears to have stabilized somewhat during the most recent period (2006-2016). Interestingly, BBS data from throughout North America (the bulk of which come from the United States) suggest a small but steady decrease in the number of Blue Jays. Causes for the disparity in the trends are unclear. The Blue Jay is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
