The Bufflehead is primarily monitored in its core breeding range through the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey (WBPHS) in western Canada, and through the Eastern Waterfowl Breeding Ground Survey in eastern Canada. The species is also monitored in British Columbia by the Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey of the Central Interior Plateau of British Columbia and formerly by the Yukon Roadside Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey. The continental population of Buffleheads is estimated at more than 1.67 million individuals (North American Waterfowl Management Plan 2012), and is experiencing an increasing population trend in most surveyed areas since the 1960s, with the highest increase occurring in the Canadian Prairies. The Bufflehead is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal. Detailed information on the population status of waterfowl species is available in the Population Status of Migratory Game Birds in Canada report (summarized version).
