The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides the most reliable data on the population status of the Calliope Hummingbird in Canada. Almost all Calliope Hummingbirds winter in Mexico, so the species is not well covered by the Christmas Bird Count and there are no other sources of data on population trends. BBS results indicate a positive population trend, the magnitude of which is highest in the most recent period (2006-2016), with an overall 40% increase in numbers relative to 1970. Range-wide results from throughout North America show a slight negative trend, but relatively little overall change, in the continental population over the same period. Results differ between the two Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) in which the species occurs in Canada, suggesting a large increase in the Northern Rockies BCR but a decrease in the Great Basin BCR. The Calliope Hummingbird population in Canada is currently at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see Canada graph below).
