Temperate-breeding Canada Goose populations are monitored by various surveys in their respective provinces (see below). Populations have expanded rapidly in all regions, but particularly in Southern Ontario and in the Prairies. For example, Canada Goose populations breeding in the southern Prairies are now estimated at more than 1 million individuals. In some areas, populations have grown to the point where they are causing conflicts with humans (e.g., fouling parks, golf courses, and private lands), crop damage and danger (e.g., collisions at airports, territorial aggression towards passers-by, and concerns about disease transmission). Regulatory amendments liberalizing the harvest of Temperate-breeding Canada Geese in southern Canada were adopted in recent years to reduce population size and potential conflicts with humans. All populations of Temperate-breeding Canada Goose, with the exception of the Maritimes population, are above the upper acceptable level relative to their national population goals. Detailed information on the population status of waterfowl species is available in the Population Status of Migratory Game Birds in Canada report (summarized version).
