The Canvasback is primarily monitored in its core breeding area in western Canada mainly through the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey. Canvasback breeding populations have increased since the 1990s and have remained at an acceptable level relative to the species' North American Waterfowl Management Plan objective since then (North American Waterfowl Management Plan 2012). These increased population levels have coincided with the return of favourable wetlands conditions in the Prairies. Detailed information on the population status of waterfowl species is available in the Population Status of Migratory Game Birds in Canada report (summarized version).
