The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the most reliable source of population status data for the Common Yellowthroat in Canada, although less than half the species' range is covered by the survey. BBS results show a moderate decrease in the population from 1970 up to the late 1990s, when it stabilized at that lower level. Some degree of regional variability is both expected and observed for such a widespread species; population trends range from a moderate increase in the Northern Rockies Bird Conservation Region (BCR) to a moderate decrease in the Boreal Taiga Plains BCR. Overall, there is no apparent geographic pattern. The Common Yellowthroat has been below acceptable levels of its national population goal since the late 1990s (see Canada graph below).
