The most reliable data for the Eastern Wood-Pewee in Canada are from the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), which provides excellent coverage of the breeding population. BBS results indicates a large, consistent decrease since about 1970, with a ~71% loss of abundance. This decrease is seen across the species' Canadian range and continues through the most recent decade. The majority of the species' North American range is in the United States, where BBS data also show a persistent, long-term decrease in the continental population, though at a slightly smaller magnitude than in Canada. The long-term population goal is based on the BBS; the Eastern Wood-Pewee is below the lowest acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see Canada graph below). Once the Management Plan is developed under the Species at Risk Act, this goal will be re-examined.
