Population status

Eurasian Skylark
(Alauda arvensis)

The small Eurasian Skylark population is best monitored by the Christmas Bird Count (CBC), which indicates a large decrease in the Canadian population. The species has also been monitored by occasional targeted counts (Campbell et al. 1997) in their small Canadian range near Victoria, British Columbia, which, in 1962 and 1969 counted 694 and 777 birds, respectively, during the peak of their Canadian abundance. Since that time until the late 1990s, the highest count has been 206 birds in 1993 (Campbell et al. 1997). Less than 10 individuals per year were observed on CBC between 2012 and 2016 (National Audubon Society 2010c). These data clearly reflect a large decrease in population since about 1970. A national population goal has not been established for this introduced species.
