Population status

Flesh-footed Shearwater
(Ardenna carneipes)

Flesh-footed Shearwaters have not been sufficiently monitored in Canada to reliably determine a change in population status relative to 1970. During pelagic seabird surveys conducted off the coast of British Columbia, between 1982 and 2005, only 22 Flesh-footed Shearwaters were encountered (Kenyon et al. 2009). The global population of Flesh-footed Shearwaters is much smaller than previously thought, numbering around 74,000 breeding pairs (Lavers 2015). Change in the global population status has not been fully quantified, but information from some of the breeding colonies in the southwest Pacific indicate that the population is declining (Lavers 2015, BirdLife International 2018a). Because of the lack of information specific to Canada, a national population goal for the Flesh-footed Shearwater has not yet been determined.
