The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides excellent coverage of the small breeding population of the Field Sparrow, which is concentrated in south-central and south-eastern Canada. BBS results indicate an overall loss of about 57% of the population since 1970. Most of the North American population breeds in the United States, where it is experiencing a similarly large and continuing decrease. The Field Sparrow is below the lowest acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see Canada graph below).
