The Great Crested Flycatcher is well monitored by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), which covers most of the species' breeding population in Canada. BBS results indicate that the national population has decreased by about 31% since 1970, though that decrease appears to have tapered off over the most recent period (2006-2012). The Great Crested Flycatcher is currently below the lowest acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below). However, the majority of the Great Crested Flycatcher's North American breeding population resides within the United States; BBS results indicate that the continental population has shown little overall change during the same time period.
