The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides the most reliable information on the national status of Golden-crowned Kinglets in Canada, though the survey does not cover the species' large northern range. BBS results demonstrate wide annual variation in the population but the overall abundance is similar to that in the early 1970s. Continental results from the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) which monitors the species on its wintering grounds in the United States provide corroboration for this assessment, though these results include birds breeding in the United States. At the regional level, results vary widely among the Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) for which reasonably reliable results are available (displayed below); the western BCRs (Great Basin and Northern Pacific Rainforest, Northern Rockies) all show long-term population decreases while the rest show increases. Considering the agreement between the BBS and CBC, the Golden-crown Kinglet is considered to have shown little overall change in abundance and is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
