Population status

Gray Catbird
(Dumetella carolinensis)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the most reliable source of monitoring data for the Gray Catbird, with good coverage of the species' breeding population across southern Canada. BBS results indicate a relatively stable population since 1970, both within Canada and at the continental level. However, at the regional level, large declines are seen in the Boreal Hardwood Transition and Atlantic Northern Forest Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs), areas where the species occurs in moderate to high densities (all BCRs for which there are reasonably reliable results are displayed below). The Gray Catbird is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal.
