The Green-winged Teal population is primarily monitored on its core breeding range through the Waterfowl Breeding Population Habitat Survey, the Eastern Waterfowl Breeding Ground Survey, as well as the Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey of the Central Interior Plateau of British Columbia. The species is also monitored outside its core breeding range by other surveys such as the Southern Ontario Waterfowl Plot Survey and the St. Lawrence Lowlands Breeding Waterfowl Survey. In western Canada, Green-winged Teal numbers have increased steadily since the early 1990s, whereas in eastern Canada, they have remained relatively stable over the same period. The Green-winged Teal population currently exceeds the North American Waterfowl Management Plan population objective of 1.9 million birds for this species (North American Waterfowl Management Plan 2012). Both populations have a national population goal and are at an acceptable level relative to their respective goals. Detailed information on the population status of waterfowl species is available in the Population Status of Migratory Game Birds in Canada report (summarized version).
