The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and Christmas Bird Count (CBC) provide good monitoring data for the Hairy Woodpecker in Canada, although neither covers the full range of the species. Results indicate a steady increase in abundance of approximately 95% in Canada relative to the early 1970s. CBC and BBS results for North America also indicate a large increase in the continental population. The Hairy Woodpecker is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
